Advanced Micro Devices (AMD): The Latest News and Upcoming Events

In addition to recent news, there are a couple of upcoming events that is bound to gain Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (NYSE: AMD) some attention from investors and traders alike. I should note that Advanced Micro Devices is in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio as we believe its making progress in the transition away from the PC market, but the performance of our position has been rather up and down recently (currently we are down about 2%). Nevertheless, there is still enough good news to keep us excited about the stock's future performance. Just consider the following recent news:

Upcoming AMD GPU '14 Tech Day. On Wednesday, Advanced Micro Devices will unveil its next-generation graphics processing unit at the AMD GPU '14 Tech Day event. Its not known whether the company plans to unleash an all-new product family for 2014 or just a flagship GPU due to arrive in Q4 2013. There will be a real-time video webcast of the showcase available on the Investor Relations home page here. Micro Server Pioneer Andrew Feldman is Interviewed. VentureBeat has interviewed Andrew Feldman who is one of the pioneers of micro servers after his company, SeaMicro, used low-cost Intel Atom chips to create a category of servers with lots of processors in a single machine and exceptionally low power consumption. Advanced Micro Devices bought SeaMicro early last year for $334 million in order to gain entry into the energy-efficient server market as well as gain new insights into server customers. Feldman is now corporate vice president and general manager of AMD's server group and the interview will give investors some insight into the company's server business. Sony Expects to Sell 5 Million PlayStation 4s for the Holidays and Into the New Year. Bloomberg has recently reported that Sony Corp. expects the PlayStation 4's lower price and wider variety of entertainment services to drive its forecast to sell 5 million units by the end of March. The PlayStation 4 is set to be introduced at $399 in November verses the $599 offered in some regions back in November 2006 for the previous console when 3.55 million units were sold during the same holiday period. The new PlayStation features a new combined processor and memory architecture from Advanced Micro Devices and it also features a PC-like design that Sony executives say will make developing games easier. In other words, keep an eye on PlayStation 4 hype and sales as any good news should help AMD's share price. AMD is Out of the S&P 500. As I noted last week, S&P 500 component stocks Advanced Micro Devices and SAIC Inc (NYSE: SAI) have swapped places with S&P MidCap 400 constituents Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASD: VRTX) and Ametek Inc (NYSE: AME) with the change occurring last Friday. My guess is that the swap is mostly a wash as there are plenty of midcap funds or ETFs that will need to own AMD shares. The Next Earnings Call I Scheduled. Advanced Micro Devices is scheduled to webcast its next quarterly earnings conference call on Thursday, October 17, at 5:30 p.m. EDT / 2:30 pm PDT to discuss the results of its fiscal third quarter ending September 28. Investors might want to keep an eye on any trading activity (especially options trading activity) in the early half of October. Share Performance. On Monday, Advanced Micro Devices fell 1.04% to $3.79 for a market cap of $2.73 billion. As you can see from the following long-term chart, shares are still down since their peak at the $10 level a few years ago:

However, AMD's share performance has been more bullish this year:

Given the above news and the AMD GPU '14 Tech Day event, up coming earnings report and the PlayStation 4 launch, investors and traders alike would be wise to keep an eye on Advanced Micro Devices.
