The airline industry has a singular talent for draining the pockets of well-intentioned investors. Highly leveraged balance sheets and bankruptcies are the norm. Significant labor costs and unpredictable jet fuel prices wreak havoc on variable costs. Yet some airlines generate solid returns quarter after quarter. Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK  ) , Ryanair (NASDAQ: RYAAY  ) , Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) , and Copa Holdings (NYSE: CPA  ) each manage to be consistently profitable. Let's examine a few themes they share in common, and zero in on their individual strategic ideas.

1. Go regional
None of the four airlines above tries to compete on a grand international scale, with presence in every metropolitan area that looks enticing on a map. Instead, each confines itself more or less to a geographical theme. Alaska Air, for example, primarily focuses on the West Coast of the U.S., along with Alaska (naturally) and Hawaii, with some coverage in the Midwest and on the East Coast. Ryanair operates as a European carrier, with comprehensive coverage across the continent.

    LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Australian stocks gave ground in early Friday trading, with banks broadly lower after overnight losses in the U.S., where investors worried that better-than-expected data would prompt the Federal Reserve to roll back stimulus soon. The S&P/ASX 200 (AU:XJO) lost 0.4% to 5,178.30, as National Australia Bank Ltd. (AU:NAB) (NAUBF) fell 1.8%, Australia & New Zealand Banking Group (AU:ANZ) (ANEWF) lost 0.8%, and Macquarie Group Ltd. Alaska Air Group, Inc., through its subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines, Inc. and Horizon Air Industries, Inc., operates as an airline company serving destinations in the western United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company provides passenger air services; and freight and mail services primarily to and within the state of Alaska and on the West Coast. As of December 31, 2009, it operated a fleet of 110 jet aircraft; and Horizon Air Industries operated a fleet of 18 jets and 40 turboprop aircraft.     US Airways (NYSE: LCC  ) has also favored the A321 recently, and has the largest A321 fleet in the world. All of its 16 narrowbody deliveries this year will be A321s, which have 30% more seats than the Boeing 737-400s that are being retired. Meanwhile, Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK  ) is following Southwest by moving to new "slimline" seats that will allow it to add six seats to each of its 737-800 aircraft and nine seats to each 737-900 aircraft. Moreover, while Alaska currently operates a variety of Boeing 737 models, the vast majority of its future orders are for the largest variant. These new aircraft, which seat 181 passengers, are replacing older planes with as few as 124 seats each.

    Sometimes, when a muscular ally begins to seem less than cordial, it can help to make friends with other big kids on the block. To this effect, Alaska Airlines is seeking to increase its ties with American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL  ) . Alaska's marketing alliance with Delta contributes 3.8% of total company revenue, but American is not far behind at 2.6%. Strategically, the company may be looking to flip the two airlines' relative importance in order to make AAL its biggest codeshare partner, which was the case five years ago when American contributed 3.4% of total revenue, to Delta's 1.9%. One would think that diminishing revenue from Delta will be a significant priority for Alaska's management this year, as it's much easier to fend off a competitive challenge from a company when you're not also partially beholden to its income. Interestingly, when questioned on the company's Q4 2013 earnings call, Vice President of Planning and Revenue Management Andrew Harrison disclosed that ALK is indeed exploring revenue options with American's management team.
