With little in the way of local news to move the market today, US stocks are taking their cues from overseas — and they don’t like what they see, leavingBoeing (BA), Nike (NKE), Caterpillar (CAT), United States Steel (X) and Peabody Energy (BTU) in the red.

Peabody Energy provides coal energy products and services to a wide range of companies in various industries worldwide. The stock has been in a steep decline for the last few years but may be stabilizing at these current prices. Earnings and revenue figures have been decreasing, over the last four quarters, but investors have been pleased with what they’ve heard during the earnings reports. Relative to its peers and sector, Peabody Energy has been one of the worst performers, year-to-date. STAY AWAY from Peabody Energy for now.

Provided that the Chinese government either encourages or permits consolidation, any of these three could be an acquirer. The likeliest target, of course, is SunTech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), which is reorganizing and which the government has already seemed to give up on. Other possible targets include ReneSola Ltd. (NYSE: SOL) and JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS).

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Bryan Murphy]
There's no denying that LDK Solar Co., Ltd (NYSE:LDK) has been a notable laggard this year compared to performances from First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) and Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL). RSOL is up nearly 180% year-to-date, with a decent chunk of that gain unfurling in just the last couple of months. FSLR is up 25% for the year so far, though that more modest gain would have been much bigger had it not been for February's 24% plunge. Meanwhile, LDK shares are down 22% year-to-date, and have barely even blipped despite the fact that solar energy has become all the rage again in recent months.

Even worse for LDK Solar, European tariffs could exact a huge price that LDK will have to pay. With LDK and Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL ) both potentially having to pay 50%-60% in tariffs, the European move would give U.S. manufacturers First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR ) and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) a chance at a reversal of fortune in Europe, as higher effective prices for Chinese modules could make both of them much more competitive on price. Earlier this week, Europe followed through with a smaller 11.8% tariff on China's solar products, reserving the right to boost tariffs to higher levels by early August.

The stock has serious momentum right now, and the trend is always your friend until it stabs you in the back. In the near term, First Solar is an OUTPERFORM. There could be a lot more room to run. However, there will likely be a steep correction in the stock price over the next one to two years due to declining demand.
