Answer: I don’t anticipate a spate of dividend cuts. FirstEnergy Corp’s (NYSE: FE) problems were apparent last fall, when it announced 2013 Q3 numbers. We do have TECO Energy Inc (NYSE: TE) and PG&E Corp (NYSE: PCG) on the UF Dividend Watch List, though the latter is in a much more precarious position than the former.

The regulatory environment is generally improving, as state and federal authorities are beginning to recognize the investment utilities have made over the past half-decade in system reliability and capacity expansion.

Another key supporting dividends is a healthier US economy, which should support better power demand from commercial and industrial customers.

Teco Energy (NYSE: TE  ) takes the cake for vertically integrated coal. Not only does the utility use coal for its 4,400 MW electricity generation, but it also owns and operates mines capable of producing nine million tons of the black gold every year. The company's dividend has grown 10% in the past five years, and new sales could boost this dividend stock's offerings even higher.

TECO Energy (NYSE: TE  ) is known for its coal-centric capacity and ownership of Appalachian mines, but the company relies on natural gas for 39% of its overall generation.

The basic materials sector is highly cyclical. It relies on a strong economy to create demand for its raw materials. Since most of its products are considered to be commodities, the sector is sensitive to supply and demand fluctuations, with end-users able to substitute based on price.

Historically, yields in this sector have been on the lower end of the scale. However, with the increased demand for certain raw materials, the stocks in this sector are beginning to see higher yields with increased profitability. In addition, depressed prices on some companies have also boosted yields.

This week, I screened my dividend growth stocks database for Basic Materials companies with a yield above 2.0% and that have increased their dividends for at least 10 consecutive years. The results are presented below:

RPM International Inc. (RPM) makes specialty coatings and products for structural waterproofing and corrosion control, as well as products for the consumer, do-it-yourself and hobby markets. In response, ArcelorMittal has prepared itself for tough times, with spending and capacity cuts as well as asset sales. That stands in contrast to Nucor (NYSE: NUE  ) , which reported higher spending on marketing and administrative costs as part of the reason its earnings dropped by 23% in its second-quarter report earlier this month.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Xcel excels at cutting carbon
Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL  ) announced today that it expects to surpass its goal of a 20% CO2 reduction by 2020 by up to 7%. Xcel has favored wind as its main method for getting rid of greenhouse gases. The utility currently owns 4,900 MW of wind capacity, approximately 12% of its total generation portfolio.

    Schadenfreude's in season
Not everyone's opposed to the law, necessarily. For example, Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL  ) is already working to expand its portfolio of wind-generated power in the state, and two years ago, it put into operation a 19-megawatt solar farm in cooperation with SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) . As a so-called "investor-owned utility," Xcel is already subject to a target of 30% renewables use by 2020 -- so a law making its rural rivals hit a 20% target probably didn't upset Xcel all that much.

Another risk factor that can often be overlooked is that electricity price increases aren't a guarantee. In fact, power price increase rulings are often determined by state regulatory energy commissions which have a duty to look out not for these companies, but also for the best interests of consumers. Last summer, for instance, Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL  ) was denied a $100 million rate increase (about $2 each month per customer) by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission after failing to sufficiently demonstrate how not raising these rates would adversely impact the company.
